DR Congo: 7 journalists killed in three years
No fewer than seven journalists were killed in three years in the DR Congo, one of Africa's most dangerous countries for media workers, Congolese journalist and writer, Freddy Mulongo, said in Paris, France.
"In DR Congo, journalists have no alternative but prison, exile or death," Mulongo said at the press conference for the presentation of his book titled: "Les dix questions. Le Congo post-Kabila par la diaspora congolaise" on Monday evening.
"The murders of our seven colleagues have never been clarified, the Kinshasa gov ernment having refused to conduct serious investigations," deplored Mulongo, who founded Reveil FM radio station in 1999 in Kinshasa.
The Congolese journalist, who now lives in exile in France, condemned the behaviour of the High Media Authority (HAM), accusing it of becoming an organ of repression of the Congolese press.
"The HAM is no longer doing any regulation. It is rather a destroyer of press freedom in Congo. It was not well heard during the various murders of Congolese journalists," stressed the former chairman of the Association of Associative and Community Radio Stations of the Congo (ARCO).
Several press freedom NGOs, including Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and Journalists in Danger (JED), regularly denounce attacks on freedom of the press and expression in DR Congo.
