Kinshasa, 23 September 2009 - After visiting South Kivu, Alan Doss, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in the DRC, visited North Kivu province, accompanied by MONUC Force Commander Babacar Gaye. The aim of the visit was to evaluate the military situation, issues relating to the protection of civilians and challenges in relation to the execution of the Stabilization Plan for the region.
Mr. Doss also stopped in Otobora, some 30 km north of Hombo and in Ngungu, 60 km southeast of Goma and met with United Nations agencies and NGOs to evaluate the humanitarian situation.
Ms. Leila Zerrougui, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in the DRC, undertook a work mission to Matadi in Bas Congo on 18-19 September 2009, to evaluate the important needs of the province and in what capacity MONUC could assist the province in meeting those needs.
As for Mr. Ross Mountain, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in the DRC and UN humanitarian Coordinator for the country, he visited Oriental Province from 19-21 September 2009, accompanied by a UNDP delegation from New York.
In Kisangani, the delegation met with the governor as well as a large group of humanitarian and development actors. In Bunia in Ituri district, Mr. Mountain visited the rehabilitation work on the 25km long Bunia-Bogoro road, a project being undertaken executed by the MONUC Nepalese engineering company. This project forms part of the stabilization and reconstruction programme for eastern DRC, otherwise known as STAREC.
Before leaving Bunia on 21 September, Mr. Mountain visited the 120 metre long Ituri bridge, rebuilt by the MONUC Nepalese contingent with funding from Great Britain.
MONUC helps to put in place the agreement of 23 March last
Since Tuesday 22 September last, MONUC began the transportation to Bukavu of the 122 ex-prisoners belonging to the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP).
MONUC, through its Political Affairs, Human Rights and Child Protection sections, has since the beginning brought all its support to the process. MONUC verified and harmonized all the different lists, undertook a medical exam of all concerned before departure, and assured the escort of the convoy to Kinshasa airport and aerial transportation to Bukavu, where the Military integration Structure (SMI) will take responsibility.
Transfer of Grégoire Ndahimana to the ICTR in Arusha
In a declaration published in New York yesterday 22 September 2009, the United Nations Secretary General greeted the transfer, on 20 September 2009 of Mr. Grégoire Ndahimana in the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). He was arrested by the DRC Armed Forces in eastern DRC on 10 August last.
Ndahimana is among 13 people under arrest warrant for serious human rights violations in Rwanda in 1994. His arrest and transfer to the ICTR in Arusha was facilitated by MONUC on the demand of the Congolese authorities.
