Death threats against DR Congo journalists condemned

KINSHASA — Press freedom body the Committee to Protect Journalists on Saturday called for authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo to investigate death threats against three reporters.

The three radio journalists -- Delphie Namuto, Caddy Adzuba and Jolly Kamuntu -- who work in the eastern city of Bukavu were named in a text message received by Namuto.

"You have a bad habit of interfering in what does not concern you to show that you are untouchable," said the text.

"Now, some of you will die so that you shut up. We?ve just been authorised to start with Kadi, then Kamuntu, then Namuto: a bullet to the head," it added.

CPJ Africa Programme Coordinator Tom Rhodes called for the authorities to mount a thorough investigation.

"Bukavu has become one of the most dangerous cities for journalists in Africa," he said.

"Authorities must do everything in their power to protect these journalists and end a long pattern of violence and intimidation against the press," he added.
