MONUC assists in the training of vulnerable children in Kinshasa

Kinshasa, 7 September 2009 - MONUC, through its Quick Impact Projects (QIPs), has assisted 61 vulnerable children (32 boys and 29 girls) in Kinshasa (orphans, street children, girl mothers and others), in mechanical training for boys and in sewing and dress making for girls. The three month theoretical training ended on 4 September last.

20 street children made up the total of 61 children, of which only 12 were able to finish their training due to financial difficulties.

The objective of the training was the social rehabilitation of these young children. For the programme trainer Mr. Dieudonné Mpenakoko, the goal has been reached, because “the pupils reacted very positively by making a considerable effort and they are now useful to society.”

MONUC contributed $10,114 to the project, and part of the money was used to buy training material, notably a compressor, a motor hoist, a welding station and a washing machine; the other part was used to pay the wages of the trainers.

During 2008, MONUC undertook 114 QIPs across the whole country, in the sectors of education, healthcare and security sector reform, among others.

The training also included technical knowledge, history, ethics, the environment, human rights and HIV/AIDS.

After this theoretical formation, the pupils are going to receive another three month training programme; after what they will be able to put in practice what they have learned, as trainees, in the business sector.

MONUC’s Political Affairs division coordinated this activity, with the support from the Christ’s Church in Congo that unites the Christian organizations to help children in difficult situations.
