Congo’s Kabila Ordered Review of Constitution, Radio Okapi Says

By Franz Wild

Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Joseph Kabila ordered a review of the country’s constitution, Radio Okapi reported today, citing Senate President Leon Kengo Wa Dondo.

“At this stage, it’s a meeting of experts,” Kengo Wa Dondo told the Senate yesterday, according to the Kinshasa-based station.

A commission including representatives of the presidency, the prime minister’s office, the two houses of parliament and the supreme court will assess changes in areas including the term served by the president and the setting of provincial boundaries, Radio Okapi said, citing unidentified officials.

Kabila took power over eight years ago after his father, Laurent, was murdered in office. He won the country’s first free elections in over 40 years in 2006.

Under the constitution, Kabila is eligible to run for another five-year term in 2011, and can’t stand for office again after that. The constitution forbids changes to the president’s term “to preserve the democratic principles” of the system.
